Objectives of Degree Programme To develop and strengthen basic academic and analytical skills, to provide important general knowledge, to develop the critical skills needed in assessing the aesthetic and practical consequences of actions and to blend these skills and knowledge into permanent tools for social ascension. Outcomes English Language: The programme will enable students to: Analyse the structure and functions of the English language, describe how the English language varies according to use and users, interpret and explain cross-cultural communication in given contexts, relate theory to practical issues in the use of English, develop the ability to use the English language as a medium for understanding, expression and communication and develop social and professional language competence. Literatures in English The programme enables students to: Establish a sound understanding of literary forms and critical approaches, broaden their knowledge of the richness and variety of the great literatures of the world, understand the fundamental principle on which the appraisal of individual works of literature is based, have a clear understanding if scientific methods in research which consist of systematic observation, classification and interpretation of data, be conversant with the similarities between recent developments in literary theory and criticism, have a firm grasp of research methodology, acquaint students with the different theories in criticism and creative writing, make students discover the distinctive elements of literary genres, enable students grasp the theory and techniques of fiction, poetry and drama, provide students the techniques of essay as an art, provide students with the techniques of writing an autobiography, train students in the editing of manuscripts, documents, and reports and introduce students to the publishing landscape. Admission Requirements Apart from the general University requirements for admission, candidates seeking to read either English or any of the Literatures at the undergraduate level must have passed Literature at the GCE A Level with at least a “D” grade or its equivalent. Graduation Requirements To graduate with a BA Degree in English, a student is required to have earned a total number of 180 credits. Employment Opportunities An English Degree is widely regarded as undergraduate training for teaching, law, Government, Social Work, Community Service and Business, journalism, creative writing, editing and secretariat duties.
